Talk: The Myth of the Specialist

Read bio

An Engineering Physics professor once told Steve that if you want to be great, you must specialize deeply and narrow your focus.

He did not buy it.

Instead of going narrow, Steve went wide.

On April 13, he will argue that diversifying, not specializing, is what leads to meaningful work and impact.

Talk: The Secret Life of a Roast Curve

Read bio

As the owner-operator of Cannon Coffee Co. in Hamilton, Chris has been roasting coffee for over two years, producing roughly 150 pounds each week for the shop. And behind every batch is something most people never see: a roast curve.

It’s a live graph tracking temperature, turning points, airflow, first crack, and development time, a visual record of how a roast unfolds in real time and how small adjustments shape the final flavour.

On April 13, he’ll pull back the curtain on what the roast curve means, and show how roasting becomes less about guesswork and more about experience, adjustment, and craft.

For three decades, Julie has been building dance floors, launching creative events, and shaping Hamilton’s independent arts scene.

Now, as a DJ instructor with the Hamilton Music Collective, she is helping more than 250 local youth learn to mix, produce, and create music of their own.

On April 13, she will share what really happens at the DJ table, and how hands-on music education creates space for young people to find their voice.
